This weekend’s Match Day 14 round of games in the First Capital Plus Premier League has been dubbed as “Super-Sunday”.Sunday will be full of excitement in Ghana football as the Premier League will see as many as five cagey derbies. At the Accra Sports Stadium, the biggest rivalry in the capital city will be rekindled when Great Olympics host Hearts of Oak.The rivalry between the two Accra-clubs dates back to decades ago and this year’s match will have an added intensity as the two sides have not faced each other in the Premier League since 2010.Coming from a crucial away victory in Mali where they beat Djoliba AC 3-1, the Phobians appear to be on the ascendancy and it will be interesting to see if the “Wonder boys” can pull the brakes on them at the Accra Stadium.A win for 13th placed Great Olympics will see them leapfrog their rivals who are currently 10th with 18 points. At the Len Clay Stadium, champions Asante Kotoko will travel to Obuasi as guests of New Edubiase in an Asanteman derby. The last time the two sides met Kotoko emerged winners after beating the home side 2-0 at the Bekwai Park. However Edubiase will be poised to defeat the Porcupine warriors and move up the League log.The Western region will see another derby when Hasaacas host Medeama at the Essipon Stadium on Sunday. In what promises to be a charged match, both sides will be determined to secure the maximum points to confirm their superiority in the region.A win for Medeama will see them move into the top four while the “do-the-do boys” could gain a massive push up on the table. The Brong Ahafo region will see two derbies with Aduana plotting to avenge the home defeat they suffered to Bechem United at the Agyemang Badu Park last season.Aduana have seen a massive improvement from last season’s lukewarm performance and are now lying second on the League log while Bechem United will really need the three points to move from the relegation zone. The second derby will be at the Sunyani Stadium between BA United and Berekum Chelsea. After winning the appeal on their docked points, fifth placed Chelsea will be determined to win Sunday’s game. However, BA United will hope to repeat their home win over Ashantigold and as they continue the battle to avoid relegation. In other matches that will be played on “Super Sunday”, Ash Gold will travel to Wa as guests of Wa All Stars. In what promises to be another exhilarating match, All Stars will want to rediscover their home dominance in League matches and hand the table-toppers a defeat at the Wa Stadium. The Miners on the other hand will want to maintain their lead on the table. Former Letterkenny Rovers youth star Dale Gorman made his professional bow in English football last night when he appeared as a substitute in the Capital One Cup clash between Stevenage and Ipswich Town.Gorman had made a number of appearances for Teddy Sheringham’s side during pre-season and impressed the former Manchester United star.Sheringham praised Gorman’s performance against Spurs and says he was a talented player with a bright future. Gorman was an unused substitute for their league opener on Saturday. However, the talented midfielder was sprung from the bench at half-time last night.Stevenage exited the competition after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town but Gorman again impressed when he made his introduction.Gorman’s father Anthony had a fine career in both the LOI and Irish League where he played for a whole host of clubs. He won a number of league titles during his spell at Belfast giants Linfield FC.As the old saying goes the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.Well done Dale and hopefully it’s the first of many appearances in English football.DELIGHT FOR DALE GORMAN AS HE MAKES HIS COMPETITIVE DEBUT FOR STEVENAGE was last modified: August 12th, 2015 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:newsSport
While one of the top Kolkata universities, Presidency, was not allowed to screen award-winning documentary Ram Ke Naam on Monday, the students of Jadavpur University could successfully screen it on their campus. The students of Kolkata’s premier universities were screening the film in solidarity with the Hyderabad Central University students, after six of them were detained for organising its screening. The film by Anand Patwardhan is based on the 1992 Ram temple movement following the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. The scene at Jadavpur University was tense before the screening, organised by the Department of Film Studies. Several students voiced their concern regarding the growing intolerance in the country. ‘Against freedom’“It is extremely sad that we have reached a point where a simple film screening is seen as a threat by the authorities and leaders. This is against basic freedom of speech and expression,” said Ritapriya Ghosh.“The permission (for screening it) was sought by the students some days ago and the authorities granted it,” JU Registrar Snehamanju Basu said.Screened earlierThe documentary has previously been screened several times in Kolkata without any resistance from any political party or authority. Kasturi Basu of the People’s Film Collective, a Kolkata-based cultural group, questioned Presidency University’s decision. “Ram Ke Naam has a ‘U’ certification from the CBFC, meaning that even children can watch it. No university can say that film, as a medium of learning, is not allowed,” she said.Presidency University students’ union spokesperson Sayan Chakraborty said there was no update from the authorities.Dean of Students Arun Maity said: “We will confirm if the students had the necessary permission… Presidency had never encroached on the right of students and promoted liberal views.” Registrar Debojyoti Konar could not be contacted.(With PTI inputs)
Roger Federer extended his winning streak over Rafael Nadal this year to four matches after beating the top-ranked Spaniard 6-4, 6-3 to win the Shanghai Masters on Sunday. The Swiss 19-time grand slam winner, who still trails Nadal 23-15 in their overall head-to-head record, didn’t face a break point and started and ended the match with service breaks.Federer took advantage of three of seven break point opportunities in the match to snap Nadal’s 16-game winning streak, which included his China Open victory last week.Photo Credit: Reuters Federer, who has won the last five encounters between the pair dating back to the 2015 Basel final, also beat Nadal in the Australian Open final, a round of 16 match at Indian Wells and the Miami final this year. The Shanghai Masters is Federer’s 94th career title, moving him into a tie with Ivan Lendl in second place on the Open era list.Nadal arrived on court with a bandage under his right knee, the same leg he twice smacked with his racket after losing his serve for the first time this week in the semifinal.Federer took advantage of a third break point in the first game of the match with a winning backhand passing shot. He broke Nadal’s serve again on a second break point in the fifth game of the second set when Nadal sailed a backhand crosscourt wide. In the final game, Nadal netted a forehand at 15-40 to end the 72-minute match.
