Wellington 15-unders advance to state with championship win over Haysville

first_imgby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington 15-and-under Babe Ruth All Stars are off to state. The locals won the district tournament at Sellers Park with a convincing 14-2 win over Haysville Monday night.Wellington will battle the host of the state tournament Cherryvale at 8 p.m. Friday, July 19. The tournament will be eight-team double-elimination and run until July 22, possibly July 23.In Monday’s game, Wellington would run-rule the team in six innings, garnering seven hits to Haysville’s three. Wesley Gilmore was MVP of the championship game.It started out as a barn-burner. Wellington was the visitors on its home field and scored a run in the top of the first.Haysville would get two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Wellington responded with two runs in the top of the third, but left the bases loaded.After a scoreless four innings, Wellington would break the game open with seven runs in the top of the fifth and four runs in the sixth to win by run-rule 14-2.Wesley Gilmore was the winning pitcher. He also received the MVP award in the game.Jace Lowe and Grayson DeJarnett were recipients of the Wow award.Wellington hopes to have a similar tournament like it had last year in Moundridge where he finished second in the 14-year-old Kansas State Tournament.Members of the 15-and-under Babe Ruth team are: from left: Nick Struble, coach; Greysen DeJarnett, Ethan Tunnel, Dallas Gilmore,coach;Derek Driskell, Dylan Jones, Nick Hyde, Cameron Bartelson, Jace Lowe,Jared Shields, Welsey Gilmore, Skyler Struble, Zach Fredrick, Kevin Lowe,coach, Connor Phelps.
