Nigerian National Charged with Power Theft

first_img– Advertisement – Authorities of the Liberia National Police (LNP) have charged a Nigerian national, identified as David Lee, for illegally tampering with the Liberia Electricity Corporation’s (LEC) network.Lee was charged with multiple crimes including theft of property, economic sabotage, fraud and criminal trespassing and is currently at the Monrovia Central Prison awaiting trial.A joint team of the Energy Monitoring Unit, comprising the LEC and the Liberia National Police (LNP) during routine patrols around the Center and Benson Streets intersection, around the Total Gas Station, arrested Lee on a light pole performing illegal connections.LNP Deputy Commissioner for public affairs, Moses Carter, told a news conference in Monrovia on Monday that suspect David Lee grossly violated Chapter 15, Sub-Chapter “B” D & F” Section 15.51, 15.80 and 15.20 of the new Panel Law of Liberia.According to Carter, the preliminary investigation revealed that suspect Lee is a resident of Center Street and was hired by one Johnny (to be identified) to carry on the act.Mr. Carter said the act allegedly committed by suspect David amounts to US$350,000.He said investigation further established that suspect David operates an illegal distribution point within his bedroom.“David used to connect residents of Benson Street and other places. The investigation also uncovered that each of the illegal subscribers paid US$40 monthly,” Carter told reporters.LEC Communications Manager Winston Bedell says the ulitility provider considers the arrest as a major boost in the fight against power theft.“The LEC reiterates that the arrest, subsequent trial and detention of the suspect is a reinforcement of our campaign against electricity theft. This is negatively impacting the corporation’s revenue and distribution,” Bedell said.According to him, the LEC will use the full weight of the law in dealing with individuals found impersonating as employees of the corporation and who engage in power theft.“These unscrupulous individuals are criminals. The public is encouraged to notify the LEC or the nearest police station to report any incident of such,” Bedell said.Meanwhile, the Power Theft Team of Liberia Electricity Corporation in collaboration with the Liberia National Police has retrieved several properties belonging to the Liberia Electricity Corporation.
