Tomar’s biggest strength is his confidence (Express Photo by Oinam Anand) Top News Like many wrestlers who competed in the Indian mud wrestling form of kushti Sandeep Tomar too had a nickname — talli As nicknames go Tomar’s — which means drunk — seems a rather cruel one He got it not because of any indiscretion with alcohol but because as a child he was particularly fond of sleeping The name stuck and stayed with him during his days at SAI’s national wrestling camp in Sonepat On August 19 when the 25-year-old gets on the mat in Rio de Janeiro in the 57 kg category ‘talli’ will make way for a more flattering tag: ‘Olympian’ Sandeep Tomar Tomar began wrestling when he was 12 In his first competition at a local dangal in his village Malakpur in western UP’s Baghpat district he wrestled seven bouts winning a grand total of Rs 14 for pinning all his opponents The stakes have risen steadily ever since He was junior national champion in 2011 and won the senior title the next year While he was seen as a top prospect he was never in the reckoning for the 2012 London Olympics In 2011 when the Olympic trials for London were being held Tomar was completing his training with the Navy which he had just joined “It was just my luck that when the trials were being held I was completing my course at the training station base INS Chilka in Orissa” says the chief petty officer with the Navy Tomar now believes that miss was for the good “I was young and I hadn’t taken part in a lot of competitions This time round I have a lot more experience” he says Indeed Tomar has won consistently in international competitions in the run-up to Rio He won bronze medals in consecutive years — 2013 and 2014 — at the Dave Schultz memorial in the USA and took gold at the World Military Championships in 2014 This year he added the Asian Championship gold to his tally beating the defending Asian Games champion Jong Hak-Jin for the title He subsequently booked his Olympic quota after finishing third at the World Olympic qualifiers in Ulaanbataar Mongolia Tomar’s win at the Asian Championships was all the more impressive considering he had just recovered from a knee injury compounded by a serious bout of dengue towards the end of the previous year Just two days after being discharged from hospital Tomar was back at the SAI campus for his training Chief coach Jagminder Singh says Tomar’s biggest strength is his confidence “He doesn’t know when he is beaten There are some wrestlers who when they face an opponent from say Iran or Russia lose a little bit of confidence Sandeep has immense self-belief It doesn’t matter who he faces he always thinks he is going to win” says Jagminder For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Top NewsTrump resists pressure to taken by the Varanasi district administration for idol immersion the Allahabad High Court has said that while religious sentiments were to be respected the purity and conservation of a river (Ganga) which is close to the hearts of the people also needs to be taken care of A Division Bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Yashwant Varma also said that district administration must take steps to send a message to the artists to use eco-friendly materials while making the idols The court passed order on October 14 while disposing of the PIL filed by Dr Purshottam Lal Vijay a resident of Varanasi who had sought direction to the district administration to not allow idol immersion in ponds and other such waterbodies Share This Article Related Article The court has already banned immersion of idols in river Ganga The petitioner had argued that with idol immersions the ponds too would get polluted which was not advisable as many had religious and historic significance too However the Varanasi administration in a counter-affidavit informed that at least 16 ponds were examined out of which 10 were found to be fit for the purpose of idol immersion They were cleaned filled with water and no change was made to their original structure Additionally the district administration has got two Ganga Sarovars made near Vishwa Sundari Bridge and the Rajghat Pul dug up and filled with Ganga water for the purposes of immersion of idols Expressing satisfaction at the efforts the court said: “For the purposes of this order it would be necessary for the Court to advert to Article 51 A of the Constitution which forms part of the chapter on fundamental duties Under Clause (e) of Article 51-A it is a duty of every citizen to promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India transcending religious linguistic and regional or sectional diversities Clause (f) mandates that every citizen shall value and preserve the rich heritage of our composite culture Equally clause (g) makes it a duty of every citizen to protect and improve the natural environment including forests lakes rivers and wild life and to have compassion for living creatures” The court further said that the matter “involves a sensitive balancing” of the freedom of religion which is recognised as a fundamental right by Article 25 of the Constitution with the duty of every citizen to protect and preserve the environment “The value and respect which citizens attribute to Ganga must equally find expression in the need to conserve the purity of the river From this perspective the district administration must in future take all necessary steps to ensure that a message is conveyed to all sculptors to use environmental friendly material for the preparation of idols as well as to desist from the use of chemicals and colours which create harm to the environment and human beings” the court said The bench also said that use of materials like plaster of paris chemicals and paints should be prohibited “This will ensure that while on the one hand religious sentiments are duly respected equally on the other conservation of a river which lies close to the hearts of the people is observed” the court said The order comes at a time when a section of saints and mahants have raised the issue insisting that idols should be immersed only in Ganga The stalemate has led to violence at least twice on September 22-23 and on October 5 Besides others Congress MLA from Pindra Ajay Rai has been arrested in this connection and booked under the NSA For all
