Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Releases Audio Of Blowout Show At Oakland’s Fox Theater [Listen]

first_imgBack in November, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead closed out a three-night California run with a show at the historic Fox Theater in Oakland, California. After two nights at Los Angeles’ Teragram Ballroom, the five-piece led by drummer Joe Russo offered up a huge close to the run during their show in northern California, offering up multiple debuts as well as a massive double encore. Today, the band has released full audio from this performance for the 58th installment of the group’s longstanding “Taper Tuesday.”Given the date of 11/11, the group opened the show with eleven staccato hits (much like the start to “Beat It On Down The Line”, only with eleven beats, as noted by Peter Costello in the setlist notes) before dropping straight into the starting verse of “The Eleven”. With this inverted take on “The Eleven”, after the lyrics portion of the song, the band landed in the intro jam and smoothly segued it into “Feel Like A Stranger”. Bassist Dave Dreiwitz was offered the opportunity shine, opening up the slinky jam that made its way into “Candyman”. From there, an extended, nearly 20-minute “Greatest Story Ever Told” led into “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo”, with the latter housing a jam featuring guitarist Tom Hamilton and keys player Marco Benevento. Closing out the first frame, the band ended things on a high with “Playing In The Band”.Opening up set two, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead offered up the classic number, “Man Smart, Woman Smarter”. The band’s debut of Jerry Garcia Band’s “Cats Under The Stars”—the title track for the band’s 1978 release, which ultimately was the only album credited to the outfit led by the Grateful Dead frontman—followed, with the tune settling into a heavy groove before transition into “Tell Me Momma”. The song contained a jam built around Dutch rock band Golden Earring’s 1973 hit “Radar Love” before returning to the reprise of “Tell Me Momma”. Closing out the set, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead offered up the classic combo of “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” before ending things on a high note with “Samson & Delilah”.For the first encore of the night, an opening jam led by Joe Russo softly and gradually built before arriving in a cover of Neil Young’s “Vampire Blues”, then transitioning into an eleven-minute “Touch Of Grey”. While double encores remain relatively rare for the group, given that the band rarely makes it to the West Coast, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned for their second encore of the night, much to the delight of the Oakland crowd, with takes on “Loser” and “New Minglewood Blues”.You can listen to full audio of the band’s Fox Theater show on November 11th, 2017, below, courtesy of Eric McRoberts and Peter Costello.
