Two incidents of rape of minor girls have come to the fore in Darjeeling over the past three days. Five persons have been arrested in connection with these cases. On Sunday, a 49-year-old man allegedly assaulted a three-and-a-half-year-old girl. The accused was arrested on the basis of a complaint by the child’s mother and sent to judicial custody. In another incident, four persons were arrested in connection with the rape of a 16-year-old girl at Phulbari in Darjeeling on Saturday. The accused, all in their 30s, were arrested on Sunday by Darjeeling police and remanded in 14 days of judicial custody. Darjeeling public prosecutor Pranay Rai said that all the accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He said that though there are no fast-track courts in Darjeeling, he would try to get the trial completed in these cases as early as possible.
