made enough money a good script is more important: Akshay Kumar A still from Jolly LLB 2 where Akshay Kumar played a lawyer from Lucknow Middle-class characters When Jolly LLB 2’s poster released we saw Akshay donning a lawyer’s look riding a Bajaj scooter and sporting a teeka on his forehead Now who else can you imagine doing that with his signature smile sneaking through that moustache That’s Akshay’s preference to play a middle-class man with whom janta can relate This makes his characters a sure-shot winner not just among the multiplex audience who like to see this side of an aam aadmi but also to the majority who actually live such a humble life And of late it looks like his moustache has become his lucky charm and hence a staple of all the characters he plays Of course it suits him too Akshay Kumar’s 2016 film Airlift was based on the real-life incident of the evacuation of Indians in Kuwait during the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein’s Iraq Small town connect And his middle-class characters shine brighter when they come fromthe interiors of India For people in metropolitan cities aren’t aware of the little nuances of small-town life So if Akshay’s character is brought their A-game to the table and only added to the success of the film Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha deals with the sanitation problem in the interiors of India Socially 2016 12:02 am Top News Ratan Tata’s comments favouring scrapping of the so-called 5/20 norm for airline operators merits serious consideration by the country’s policymakers The chairman emeritus of Tata Sons has rightly criticised the rule that requires an Indian carrier to have a minimum of five years of domestic running experience and at least 20 planes in its fleet to operate international flights Tata may have business interests in seeing that this rule goes His group after all is a co-promoter of two relatively new airline ventures — AirAsia India and Vistara — whose operations are impacted by the 5/20 rule But that does not diminish the strength of the basic argument that he is making of how the entrenched carriers are using “monopolistic pressures” and “lobbying” to retain the rule Business interests apart it is consumer interest that is the real issue here In a liberalised economy the government cannot dictate the fares that airlines charge from consumers All it can do is ensure a regulatory environment that allows competition The 5/20 norm clearly undermines this by circumscribing new entrants and foreclosing the benefits that would accrue to consumers by way of cheaper tickets better services newer routes and seamless travel The supposed rationale behind the rule is to ensure that only credible airlines — with recognised records of safety experience and financial strength — are allowed to operate This argument would effectively shut out even ventures that have established international carriers as co-promoters This is the case with the two Tata joint ventures and also others that may be wanting to set up similar JVs Related to this is the fact that in today’s world making distinctions between domestic and international operations of airlines makes no sense There are many overseas Indian workers living in hinterland Indian towns using domestic flights to connect to metro airports for international travel These consumers mostly from less well-off backgrounds stand to gain from airlines offering seamless connectivity at competitive rates including through leveraging their international network and plying specific hitherto underserved routes At the end of the day it is all about lowering the barriers of entry in aviation or for that matter any business The NDA government should lay to rest the controversial rule as part of its much-awaited civil aviation policy For all the latest Opinion News download Indian Express App More Top NewsNew Delhi: The Rajya Sabha worked for 7995 percent of the scheduled hours during the Monsoon Session (Representational Image) Top News Scientists have identified the cells responsible for hair growth as well as the mechanism that causes them to turn grey a finding that could lead to new treatments for balding and greying hair “Although this project was started in an effort to understand how certain kinds of tumours form we ended up learning why hair turns grey and discovering the identity of the cell that directly gives rise to hair” said Lu Le associate professor at the University of Texas Southwestern in the US “With this knowledge we hope in the future to create a topical compound or to safely deliver the necessary gene to hair follicles to correct these cosmetic problems” said Le The researchers found that a protein called KROX20 more commonly associated with nerve development in this case turns on in skin cells that become the hair shaft These hair precursor or progenitor cells then produce a protein called stem cell factor (SCF) that the researchers showed is essential for hair pigmentation When they deleted the SCF gene in the hair progenitor cells in mouse models the animal’s hair turned white When they deleted the KROX20-producing cells no hair grew and the mice became bald according to the study The researchers serendipitously uncovered this explanation for balding and hair greying while studying a disorder called Neurofibromatosis Type 1 a rare genetic disease that causes tumours to grow on nerves Scientists already knew that stem cells contained in a bulge area of hair follicles are involved in making hair and that SCF is important for pigmented cells said Le However they did not know what happens after those stem cells move down to the base or bulb of hair follicles and which cells in the hair follicles produce SCF – or that cells involved in hair shaft creation make the KROX20 protein he said If cells with functioning KROX20 and SCF are present they move up from the bulb interact with pigment-producing melanocyte cells and grow into pigmented hairs But without SCF the hair in mouse models was grey and then turned white with age according to the study Without KROX20-producing cells no hair grew the study said Researchers will now try to find out if the KROX20 in cells and the SCF gene stop working properly as people age leading to the greying and hair thinning seen in older people – as well as in male pattern baldness Le said The research also could provide answers about why we age in general as hair greying and hair loss are among the first signs of ageing For all the latest Lifestyle News download Indian Express App More a link between lack of sleep and increased risk of breast cancer a new study has found that melatonin a hormone produced in the human brain at night to regulate sleep cycles appears to suppress the growth of these tumours While treatments based on this key discovery are still years away the results can give scientists a key foundation on which to build future research “You can watch bears in the zoo but you only understand bear behavior by seeing them in the wild Similarly understanding the expression of genes in their natural environment reveals how they interact in disease settings That’s what is so special about this work” said co-author of the study David Arnosti Professor at Michigan State University in the US Scientists have speculated that the lack of melatonin due in part to our sleep-deprived modern society put women at higher risk for breast cancer The latest study showed that melatonin suppresses the growth of breast cancer stem cells providing scientific proof to support the growing body of anecdotal evidence on sleep deprivation The research team was led by Juliana Lopes a visiting researcher from Sao Paolo Brazil For their experiment the scientists grew tumours from stem cells known as “mammospheres” The growth of these mammospheres was enhanced with chemicals known to fuel tumour growth namely the natural hormone estrogen and estrogen-like chemical Bisphenol A
